How to choose the right school?
There are hundreds of independent boarding schools in England, each with their own attributes, amenities and entrance requirements.
It is essential to find a school where your child feels comfortable in their surroundings and the academic pace is matched to their own.
Some schools are highly academic, while others take great pride in their reputation as a sporty school. One might have an exceptional music or drama department while another may have invested heavily in a state of the art science block. A school may offer an activity that is of particular interest to your child (i.e. horse-riding, sailing, rowing) or may have a reputation for its’ gentle pastoral care.
Newton Bright consultants visit schools frequently to keep up to date on admissions criteria and to maintain relationships with registrars.

What is the right age to start school in England?
Depending on whether you are looking to send your son or daughter to a boys-only school, a girls-only school or a co-educational school, there are different points of entry:
- Boys only (Prep 7-13, Senior 13-18)
- Girls only (Prep 7-11, Senior 11-18)
- Co-educational (boys and girls) (Prep 7-13, Senior 13-18)
- University (18+) 3 or 4 year Bachelor degree
English families often register their children for their school of choice at birth so it is advisable to start the process well in advance so that your child is prepared ahead of time, thereby improving their chances of getting offered a place.
What types of boarding school are best suited to overseas students?
As an overseas boarder, your child will probably feel more comfortable in a school where the majority of pupils stay in at weekends. Generally speaking, rural schools tend to have a higher percentage of full-boarders.
- Day schools: children go home every day
- Flexi Boarding: children stay at school 2/3 nights per week
- Weekly Boarding: children go home on weekends
- Full boarding: children go home on exeat weekends and holidays
Will my child need a British guardian?
We offer a guardianship service for international pupils attending boarding schools in Britain as this is a statutory requirement.
During term time, guardians attend school meetings on behalf of parents and report back on progress.
During short and mid-term school holidays, guardians welcome your child into their home as part of the family and organise leisure activities to keep them entertained.
Our education consultants act as liaisons between the school, UK Guardian and the child’s family so that your child feels fully supported.
Is my child suited to a British boarding school education?
The first step is to arrange an initial consultation with a Newton Bright education consultant to discuss your education goals for your child and to gain an overview of the British education system and the practicalities of sending your child to school there.
Depending on your child’s age, academic ability and level of English, we will recommend the most appropriate course of action.

At the initial consultation in Moscow we discuss your child’s education goals and give you an overview of the British education system and the practicalities of sending your child to school there.
Following a preliminary assessment of your child’s personality, academic ability and current level of English, we provide you with a short-list of suitable schools.
The Director of Studies will devise a bespoke study programme for your child to follow with our native English tutors to prepare for entrance exams.
Tutoring in Moscow
First-Steps Programme – Children aged 5-7
The First Step Programme’ was devised specifically for younger children to bridge the gap between the Russian and British curricula. As well as being an accelerated language course, it also teaches quantitative thinking and broadens the knowledge of natural sciences. Studies show that the brain is particularly receptive to language development in the early years so this course will give your child a head start and is an excellent foundation to build on.
English as a Foreign Language
Newton Bright offer private English tutoring in all subjects for children who aim to study the British curriculum at one of the international schools in Moscow.
We work closely with the registrars of these elite schools and have designed our intensive courses to develop the necessary skills for entry.

Boarding School Entrance Exam Preparation
Newton Bright tutors prepare children for entrance into leading British schools at 11+, 13+ and 16+. using our unique study skills development programme which helps children succeed academically in the British boarding system.
Following an initial academic assessment of your child, our Director of Studies will develop a personal study programme and arrange for suitable tutors to prepare your child for the required entrance exams.
Entrance exams are based on the following:-

- English
- Verbal Reasoning
- Non-Verbal Reasoning
- Short Interview
Our native English tutors were educated at British boarding schools and many are recent graduates from top British universities. They are accustomed to the demands of attending prestigious schools and can offer first-hand advice to students preparing for entrance exams and interviews at English schools.
Newton Bright’ Director of Studies works closely with your child’s tutors to monitor progress and to make sure that they are on track. The study programme is personal to your child and can be adjusted if deemed necessary. Your personal education consultant in Moscow will keep you up to date on progress.
Depending on your child’s learning style, personal goals and timeline, it may be preferable to choose a live-in tutor for an intensive preparation. This option offers flexibility as your child’s tutor can accompany your family during holidays.
GCSE and A-Level Revision Courses
Newton Bright offers private tutoring during the school holidays to help students attain the best results at GCSE and A-Level. (aged 16 and 18)
These courses have proven to be extremely effective with students regularly improving by at least one grade and often improving two and attaining an A grade having previously attained C’s.
In addition to the core subjects where support is most often needed, (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English, Geography, History) we have tutors that teach all subjects at GCSE and A Level.
The Newton Bright Director of Studies develops a personal revision plan alongside students and maintains regular contact with them and their tutors to monitor progress and adapt the revision plan as needed.
To prepare students for examinations, tutors teach lessons exclusively in English using British text-books and past exam papers.
The result is an efficient learning schedule where the student makes measurable progress, feels supported and gains confidence in their own ability to succeed.
